Abstract
Although Russell`s circumplex model of affect is one of the most widely used modelsfor capturing self-reported emotions, few, if any, studies have examined whether thismodel is appropriate for measuring changes in emotions in different contexts. Weconstruct an experiment which enables us to manipulate emotions and study theconsequences of these manipulations over time. We find that self-report data at theend of our experiment match well with the circumplex model of affect, but that themodel changes with experimental context over time. We suggest methods todetermine when the circumplex model of affect is constant across different contextsand can be used to compare changes in emotions. Further we suggest a pragmaticsolution when such comparisons cannot readily be made.
